Plymouth Millbay Railway Station, Union Street Bridge and Millbay Signal Box

UN/060/01

The railway bridge spanning Union Street just before demolition, leading left to Plymouth Millbay station. The same scene today and hard to believe a railway ever existed in this part of Plymouth. The roof line of the Odeon cinema (now closed) and the public house 'The Two Trees' can be found in both photographs. The railway bridge replaced by a foot bridge connecting the Plymouth Pavilions leisure complex (built on the site of Plymouth Millbay station) and a car park.

After closure to passenger traffic on 15 September 1958, Plymouth Friary station became the city's main goods depot until Tavistock Junction yard took on this role. Photographed on 16 June 1975, the station site was demolished in 1976 and is now covered by houses and industrial units. The sky line has almost completely changed in recent years with the towers of St Andrew's Church & the Guildhall still visable. Only the very tip of the Charles Church spire is visable in the recent scene.
